Homemade Vanilla

The Sweetest Gift: Why We Make Homemade Vanilla Every Year

There’s nothing more personal than gifting something homemade. The time, intention, and care it takes to create something from scratch make it feel extra special—both to give and to receive. In a world where quick convenience often wins, homemade gifts feel like a fading tradition. But in our home, I do my best to keep that spirit alive.

One way we honor this tradition is by making homemade vanilla extract every summer, usually starting in June. It’s incredibly easy to make, and honestly—who doesn’t love the sweet, nostalgic smell of vanilla? What makes it even more special is that I always include my kids in the process. I want them to understand the value of working with your hands, of putting effort into something for someone else, and how meaningful it is to give a gift that didn’t come from a store shelf.

Come holiday season, our homemade vanilla becomes one of our favorite gifts to share. Whether it’s tucked into a gift basket or tied with ribbon as a stocking stuffer, it always feels appreciated. Most people are in full baking mode by then, and it’s such a thoughtful, useful touch to add to their favorite recipes.

It’s a simple tradition, but one that’s rooted in love, time, and intention—my favorite kind of gift.

How to Make Homemade Vanilla Extract

You’ll Need:

  • 6–8 whole vanilla beans (Madagascar or Tahitian are popular choices)
  • 1 cup of vodka (you can also use bourbon or rum for a slightly different flavor)
  • A clean 8 oz glass jar or bottle with a tight-sealing lid

Instructions:

  1. Split the vanilla beans lengthwise with a sharp knife to expose the seeds inside. You don’t have to scrape them out—just splitting the beans is enough.
  2. Place the beans into your jar, making sure they’re fully submerged. If needed, you can cut the beans in half to fit.
  3. Pour the vodka over the beans, filling the jar completely.
  4. Seal the jar tightly and give it a good shake.
  5. Store in a cool, dark place (like a pantry or cupboard), and give it a shake every week or so.
  6. Let it steep for at least 4 months, though 6+ months will give you the best flavor. The longer it sits, the richer the extract becomes.

Gifting Tip:
Decant your finished extract into pretty glass bottles, add a simple label and a ribbon or tag, and you’ve got the most lovely, thoughtful homemade gift.

I get my labels made thru Avery online and they are waterproof and turn out amazing!
